Chapter

Nine

We went home, where I washed and bandaged up my toe, coddled Bel’s hurt feeling about being called a cat, Win took a shower and attended to the injury on his head (which wasn’t horrible, thankfully), and I freshened up so we could have dinner at Sylvie’s Fish and Chips.

I felt like all we’d done today was drive all over Eb Falls, with very little conclusions drawn. While we had some clues, they certainly didn’t all fit together. Tattoos and a picture of a dead yogi obsessed with a blue flower, possible forged pottery and creepy warrior figurines, buttloads of cash, and a shovel with sand on it.

My head was spinning trying to make it all fit.

On the way to Sylvie’s, I called on Arkady, who I felt as though we’d neglected today after meeting with Kathleen.

“Arkady?”

His reassuring rumble answered, “My pork chop, how are you this evening?”

I smiled. His voice in my ear always soothed me. “I’m feeling up against a wall, carrot cake. How are you? Any signs of Trish in the afterlife?”

“Nyet, my sweet friend. I hope this means she has crossed into the light where happier horizons loom.”

After seeing her battered body, I hoped that was true. “Me, too. What about the yoga guy? Heard any ghostly gossip? Anything?”

“Again, nyet, sugar snap. Did you put this blue flower man’s picture into the Google search place to see if he is on Internet?”

Yeah. I had. And no, he wasn’t. “I did, also a big fat nyet. The only connection I have is the lotus position in yoga and the lotus flower pin we found. They’re connected, but I don’t know how. Have you thought any about what’s been going on today? The meeting with Kathleen? You’ve been pretty quiet. What’s your take?”

“I have been observing, malutka. Thinking always makes me pensive, but I paid careful attention to Kathleen and her behaviors.”

I rolled my head on my neck, my toe still stinging. “Did you observe anything unusual about her?”

“My heart was bleeding listening to her, malutka. How tragic to find long-lost sister, but sister is murdered before they have chance to get to know one another again. Such sadness and misfortune.”

Nodding, I sighed. “It’s very tragic.” But that didn’t help me with impressions of her.

“Have you considered talking to this friend Kathleen speaks of? Julia? The lady who thought she saw Kathleen.”

Win slapped the steering wheel. “Good job, chap! I’d almost forgotten about her. She’d certainly be worth speaking to.”

“I’ll put it on my list. In fact, let me text Kathleen and see if she can connect me with Julia. Anything else, Arkady?”

“I have nothing else to add, Fruity Pebbles. I cannot get my feet under my body on this one.”

Laughing, I agreed. “Me neither, Apple Jack, but we have lots to look into. Plenty more in the way of suspects to go.” I busied myself dropping the pictures of the items Trish had in her shed into Google—and gasped. “Hold on…”

“Dove?”

My heartbeat quickened and my hands grew clammy.
